2010 Summer Classes & Programs at the

Martin County Community Learning Center

Computer upgrades have arrived!  Ivy Tech Bloomington switched the Center’s older computers in LAB103 and LAB104 with Windows XP, Office Professional 2007, and MS Project. This opens up an entirely new world for educational opportunities for area students.

Also, Ivy Tech Community College classes are coming. Cut your commute time and enjoy the same quality of education and accreditation that is offered on Ivy Tech’s Bloomington campus.  For Fall Semester, the MCCLC will be providing ENGL-111, English Composition on Tuesdays, August 24 through December 14 from 6-9pm. MCCLC will also provide SOCI-111, Introduction to Sociology which will be held on Thursdays, August 26 through December 16 from 6-9pm.

Father’s Forever Coalition, along with the Marriage & Family Alliance, is offering two more Free Computer Applications Courses at the Center.  The first one is on Thursdays, June 24 through July 22, and the second one is on Tuesdays, September 7 to October 5.  Both sessions are from 6pm to 9pm.  This program is geared specifically for the ‘breadwinner’ of the family in search of new employment or career advancement.  Subjects include: Basic Computer Skills, Practical Internet Savvy, Microsoft Applications—such as Word and Excel, Résumé Writing and Professional Correspondence.   Pre-registration is required.

Unemployed?  Endeavoring to make a career move, perhaps to a contract or government position at CRANE?  Well, let’s talk.  How is that résumé?  Instructor Darlene Ridgway with Bramble Consulting has developed two excellent prep classes for those in the job hunt.  Résumé Assistance-Level One shows students how to search for various position openings at NSWC Crane (including both contractor and government) and how to work up a great résumé.  Cost for the course is $25.00 and is scheduled Thursday, July 8, 6-8pm.  Résumé Assistance-Level Two will build upon the first session by teaching students how to navigate on the Internet effectively for contract/government positions, and how to learn what ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ skills are, in addition to KSA’s.  Seats are available Thursday, July 15 from 6-9pm.  Price is $50.00.

An excellent follow-up to Résumé Assistance I and II is Bramble Consulting’s new course, Breaking Ground.  This is a life-planning course designed to help individuals establish a realistic career plan.  Students will develop a workable career search based on personal interests and abilities.  They will also create professional cover letters and résumés highlighting relevant accomplishments.  Finally, this course will prepare students for their first interview and how to execute proper follow-up.  Breaking Ground is scheduled Tuesday, June 22 and Thursday, July 22 from 6 to 8:30pm.  Price is $40.00.

Indiana Drug Education and Awareness Solutions is conducting an ongoing Overcomer’s Recovery Support Group at the Center.  Meetings are held every Tuesday evening from 6-8pm, and newcomers are heartily invited.  There is no cost for participation.  For further information, contact Jason Underhill at 812-653-1908.

How would you like to help someone become able to read?  Southern Indiana ranks among one of highest regions for adult illiteracy in the nation.  For Martin County, our illiteracy percentage is nearly a third of our population.  The Martin County SOAR! Literacy organization, in conjunction of the MCCLC, will be providing a four-night, free tutor training at the Martin County Community Building on August 24, 26, 30 and 31 between 5 and 8pm.  Anyone interested is heartily encouraged to contact SOAR! at 812-639-8485 for further information.

For all classes and programs listed, unless otherwise noted, call Steve at the Center for further information or registration at 812-295-2674.

Test proctoring, GED, college placement testing, fully-confidential literacy and ESL programs, and Career interest/aptitude testing are also currently being offered as well as other valuable services at the Martin County Community Learning Center.  The Center is open Monday - Thursday from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and Fridays by appointment only.  Steve Gonzales, Coordinator is more than happy to assist anyone interested in learning more about the Center and its wide spectrum of services.  Simply call the Center at 812-295-2674 to schedule a time to discuss your future possibilities.

A special message from the coordinator…

As many of you know, the Martin County Community Learning Center will run out of state operating funds by this November.  After that, the doors will be shut unless short-term remedy is applied.  For the long haul, Steven and other concerned individuals are vigorously seeking money through grants; but even if they are successful with appropriate awards, this will not take care of the immediate shortfall.

Historically, the Center assists approximately 300 students monthly with their educational goals.  This is a significant mark, especially in regards to non-traditional student outreach within a county of our size.  Where else can you find a full-fledged educational facility providing quality on-site training within a non-threatening environment?

Please help us keep the doors open and programs operating by either making tax-deductable donations for the Center to the Ivy Tech Foundation, Inc. or supporting us on the newly developed local advisory board—writing grants, marketing and fundraising.

If you have questions or need further assistance with this approaching situation, please contact Steve Gonzales at the Center at 812-295-2674, or Rick Cunningham, Executive Director of Resource Development, Ivy Tech Bloomington at 812-330-6067.

You will feel good knowing that you are making one of the most worthwhile investments for the community, and one that will last a long time for Martin County

Making change within your life is just one step away.
